As Christmas approaches it is time to get into the spirit with a worldwide favourite, Mulled Wine. This is a quick 5 minute prep recipe perfect for all occasions whether it’s date night or a family party.

This recipe is easily customisable to fit with your taste buds. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your favourite spices and wines to find your perfect mulled wine!

MULLED WINE INGREDIENTS

  • Wine Bottle 750ml – At Penelopes we recommend an all time favourite Merlot due to its perfect balance between dry but also fruity flavour. However it is completely up to you on which wine you use! It hasn’t got to be expensive, any wine you have at hand will do.
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks – We love using cinnamon sticks, however if ground cinnamon is what you have at hand this would also be fine!
  • Fresh Oranges – One slice will be used for the flavour of the wine, and another slice for the garnish. (This is optional and can be easily customised to your taste).
  • Spices – We recommend 2 star anises and 3 fresh bay leaves. However we know this varies from each country so customise as you please. This could be vanilla pods, nutmeg etc.
  • Sugar – Here at Penelopes we use sugar which is a classic, but feel free to switch it up with out favourite sweetener such as maple syrup. We like to use 2 to 4 tablespoons of the desired sweetener.

HOW TO MAKE MULLED WINE

  1. Combine all ingredients into a saucepan and give them a stir to make sure it is perfectly
  2. Heat the ingredients on a medium high heat until wine almost begins to simmer.
  3. After the wine has begun to simmer, reduce the heat to low, and cover the saucepan. Leave this for as long as you please, it could be between 20 minutes to 2-3 hours.
  4. Next pour all contents of saucepan into a fine strainer to remove any oranges, cinnamon sticks, star anise etc.
  5. Give the mulled wine a taste, and add the desired amount of extra sweetener if needed.
  6. Finally service up your mulled wine in mugs and top with your favourite garnishes and enjoy!
